Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube and a notable enthusiast of cryptocurrency, has sadly passed away after a two-year battle with non-small cell lung cancer, Today’s Gazette has learned.
In a Facebook post, her husband, Dennis Troper, shared the news, stating, “My beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today after living with non-small cell lung cancer.”
Wojcicki, 56, was a pioneering figure in Silicon Valley, was instrumental in the early days of Google, working alongside its founders when the company was developed in a California garage. She later went on to lead YouTube, where she made significant contributions to the tech industry.
Though details surrounding her passing are limited, Wojcicki’s passion for cryptocurrency was well known. Her interest was publicly noted when the Bankless YouTube account faced an erroneous block. Initially, there was concern within the crypto community that YouTube was targeting the cryptocurrency sector due to issues with scams and bots. Wojcicki personally addressed the situation, clarifying that the ban was a mistake and that the Bankless account had been restored.
In her response, Wojcicki expressed her strong interest in cryptocurrency and Web3, inviting Bankless to discuss how YouTube could engage with the evolving crypto landscape. She remarked, “I love the level of conversation happening around crypto on YouTube and am very interested in Web3 and the role we can play in this space.”
Beyond the cryptocurrency world, Wojcicki’s influence on emerging technology is profoundly felt at Google and beyond. Her pioneering role as one of the leading women in technology will be greatly missed.
