EigenLayer recently came under an attack from hackers when its Twitter account’s security was breached and hackers published fake airdrop updates. The Ethereum restaking protocol developer took to its social media handle to confirm the attack after suspicious posts were seen on its account.
The hacker attempted to lure users via a phishing link that was attached to several posts that promoted an unscrupulous airdrop. The link initially appeared to lead users to the website of EigenLayer Foundation.
In response to the hack, Eigen Labs, the developers of EigenLayer posted “The @EigenLayer handle has been compromised.”
Eigen Labs went further to caution its followers against clicking unsafe links and to carefully verify if the platform they are engaging with is ‘eigenlayer.xyz.’ Eigen Labs promised to update its followers once EigenLayer’s Twitter account is finally secured.
Security analysts suggests that the links were wallet drainers that were built to empty out wallets. Any unsuspecting user whose wallet has authorized access could see their entire assets swiped should they click on those links. Scam Sniffer’s security team reported that one account fell prey to the scam and eventually lost about $800,000 worth of crypto assets on Friday.
The hackers’ posts began with an update on EigenLayer’s reallocation of token for the season 2 of EigenLayer stakeholders airdrop. A number of popular social media accounts belonging to corporate organizations have been hacked to promote crypto-related scams this year.
Sometime in August, fast food maker, McDonald’s Instagram page was hacked in order to promote ‘Grimace,’ a memecoin based on the Solana network. The post promoting the token was later deleted, the market cap of Grimace soared to up to $20 million, although it would later fall drastically below $1 million.
EigenLayer’s platform enables users earn by depositing and staking ethereum tokens in order maximize opportunities from actively validated services (AVS).
